I'd forgotten all about that thread lol - In any case, all I was talking about in that thread was the ability to have the phone play custom tones. However since they, at least on my phone (don't know about newer phones) exist on the SD card, they will not play if the SD card is currently inaccessible, i.e. during initial startup or when connected via USB. If you use a file manager application you can browse the contents of the phone itself in which case you can locate the directory of the default ringtones and notification sounds, the problem is writing to those directories which would, of course, require root access. In short, it's nice that many Android devices are rootable, but it'd better if they were more customizable out of the box for the non-rooters.
