Verizon is making some huge changes to the way it operates. On August 13th, the carrier will be changing its plans in regard to data and devices. Verizon will now be offering four data plans and will no longer offer separate single-line or family plan options.

Two-year contracts will also be gone as well as smartphone subsidies. They will be moving to a similar system that T-Mobile uses by letting customers buy a phone outright or allowing them to pay monthly installments.

With the new plans each smartphone line will cost $20 a month, with tablet and Jetpack hotspot products costing $10 per month. Other devices such as smartwatches will cost $5 a month.

So they're basically moving everything to the MORE Everything and Edge plans (I did not read the article).

one note that i'm curious about because I just got off the phone with vzw..

so one of my lines had finished it's edge program. vzw rep told me that the $25 discount I get from that phone that had the edge program, will stay on. So $40 - $25 = $15 per line still and i'm not paying for the device payment anymore. That's what she told me at least. I'll confirm on my next bill. I didn't think the discount would still be there after the phone is paid off . I'm bringing this up because the new $20 per line makes more sense than the $40 per line (if you had your own phone).

now my other line which I paid for the subsidized phone is still paying $40 so it might be worth while for me to change to this plan.

I too have 5 lines..4 that still have ud and one is a line just sitting and doing nothing..I don't see me changing anything..

Fore reference, here's what they're currently offering on the More Everything (outside the quotes).

$30=1GB, $40=2GB, $50=3GB, $60=4GB, $70=6GB, $80=10GB

So, you're getting a bit more data on some plans for less or equal money and the line access charges a smaller per phone. They must REALLY be making profit off of the device payment plans then...

Adding some posts from my other thread...

So, 12 GB will be the largest? It says share that with up to 10 devices. Imagine 12 GB between 4 or 5 phones...I can't comprehend how that is possible.

That's how I read it, of course there's taxes and fees. Wonder if they are going to get rid of the upgrade fee?

Soooooo in other words, youre STILL in a contract b/c if youre making payments on a phone you still have to pay remaining balance if you wanna leave but average ppl isnt b/c its not financially efficient. Heres why, majority of Vzw phones are locked to Vzw and if you leave and pay ETF (which have increased ;)) and remaining balance youre gonna be outta more $$$. This is actually better for Vzw b/c once you start making payments, youre not gonna pay all said fees just to jump to another carrier and have to start from scratch... IMO

As an example ; If you buy an $800 phone, pay $27 a month and leave after a few months (up to ~14 months) the final tally will be higher than $350 of the current etf so in essence you're still under contract (to the phone instead of the line) but have a higher etf. Just like the current etf it slides downward each month but by a different amount.

Seriously the phone I want, the z4v, is rumored to come out on the 13th and on that day I'll have to sign this new plan. It took me a good while to figure out the MORE Everything plan and Edge program numbers just a few weeks ago, I gotta go through this again?!

And you can share that 1GB with the wife and kids! That commercial with Rick Astley will be something like...Megabytes all around!

Nah. This one is easier. You pay data allotment fee +$20 per phone + phone monthly fee (if you go edge, nothing if you buy full paid at the time of purchase). No discounts or other gimmicks like with MEP.
If you pay $800 , just an example, for your phone but get Edge 24 months it's $33.34 per month . You only have 1 line and get 1GB of data on it. It's $30 for data, $20 phone fee, $33.34 Edge payment. $83.34 per month plus whatever your local state and federal government decide you owe them for the privilege of using it. None of that "it's this much if you do this but that much if you do that".

I'll have to take a look into it, but it seems these plans are much more straightforward compared to the MEP. So if Verizon is going this route does that mean MEP is done with as well?

Hopefully the z4v comes out next Friday and I can just be done with it.

I did read larger data "buckets" will be available, they just aren't promoting them. Have to ask in store. Prolly will know after the 13th on the cost. Mu guess is since they aren't promoted, they will be at a much higher rate. 20GB for $150+

My contact is up in 8 months. This new plan of theirs is going to push me in one of two directions. One is toward AT&T if they keep contracts. The other is toward a non VZW branded phone. If I'm going to have to pay for a phone outright there's no reason to buy one of their phones and get stuck with their slow updates. I'm still waiting for 5.1 for my X while just about everyone else on the planet who owns one already has it. VZW has had it in their labs for a month now.
