John Lennon once said something pretty remarkable that I like to quote, "Life is what happens while you are making other plans." It seems that nature may be stepping in to prove that statement in regards to the GalaxyForums.net and DroidForums.net NYC trip to cover the Samsung Mobile Galaxy SII Release Event on Monday the 29th. The storm is getting so bad, that parts of New York City and other areas of the eastern seaboard are being evacuated as a precaution. Because of this, it is very likely that our flight on Sunday to NYC will be cancelled, or at the very least be of questionable risk.
We are not going to rule out that we will be at the event, even if the event doesn't get cancelled itself because of the weather, but for now we will have to play "wait and see." If the storm miraculously abates some time tomorrow, then we will be there to cover the Samsung event. If not, then we will just have to hold out for the next interesting release event in the future.
To indirectly commiserate the impending "storm of doom" FEMA has recently just released an app for Android! The app will surely prove to be useful should a disaster actually occur. It has tons of, "...useful tips, checklists, contact numbers and the latest news for before, during and after a disaster."
Let us intend that it goes completely unneeded this weekend, and from now until the end of time! Here's a pic of the app below, and don't forget to download the app on the Android Market, just in case we actually need it.

The folks over at Pocketnow.com got hold of a promo pic showing the three remaining U.S. variants of the Samsung Galaxy S II. Verizon may have passed on the SGS2, but Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T didn't, and they are together in the above "group photo op." It will be exciting to see these flagship phones finally arrive, and their is intel on the interwebs, that although Verizon may not be getting this version of the SGS2, they may be getting a 4G LTE cousin to it later down the line. We will keep you apprised.

Some of our tipsters over at HPTouchpadForums.net may have just broken an intriguing "good news, bad news" story. According to a couple of sources, HP is cancelling the current HP TouchPad orders that haven't shipped yet. That's the bad news. The good news is that the reason they are cancelling it is because they are going to retract their initial discontinuation of the product line, and re-continue it (plus they are completely out of stock as well).
In some ways this isn't that great, because the opportunity to get a decent tablet for the low-low price of $99 dollars is slipping away; however, it is not too bad. Now, after seeing the relative success of the product with folks that either want a really cheap tablet, or folks that want to put Android on it, HP wants to revive it from the dead. Who knows... they may consider working out a licensing deal to get Android on it from Google. Of course, that is pure speculation at this point. Share your thoughts in the forums!

The TBolt just got a big price drop for new customers over at Amazon Wireless. You can now get the phone on a new individual contract for only $.01. A renewed individual contract is still sitting at $119.99, but that is still cheaper than a Verizon store.

Reports indicate that the HTC Vigor just received Bluetooth and WiFi certification a few days ago. Rumors indicate we may see the phone by October 6th, and this certification pushes forward with that idea. Here's a refresher on the specs:
- 4.3″ HD screen
- 1GB RAM
- 1.5GHz dual-core processor
- 16GB internal storage
- 8MP rear camera
- 2MP front
- New version of Sense known - version 3.5
- 4G LTE
That processor and ram seem pretty juicy! What do you guys think of this one? Is it worth waiting a bit longer for?

We have some more interesting Droid Bionic stuff for you today. The pics above are of the Droid Bionic boot animation, and the video below shows it off as well. However, even better than that is that you can download it and try it on your own phone if you want! It doesn't require root to work on most phones, but there may be some that could prove troublesome. Here's a quote from AndroidPolice with the instructions, and some download links below,
Downloads: BootAnimation.zip and Bionic.ogg (Boot Sound)
On some phones, root access isn't required for installing custom boot animations if you copy to /data/local, but I can't guarantee it will work on every phone, so on those you may need to root first. Since there are many ways of installing bootanimation.zip, we've listed some of them here.
As for Bionic.ogg, if you want the boot sound enabled, you'll have to figure out the place where it goes on your phone - most likely some directory under /system/media or /data/local.
Sometimes it is really fun to be a tech-nerd!

We have an exclusive for you today. One of our tipster/sources let us know that CostCo will be offering an amazing exclusive deal on the Droid Bionic. The price is the same as through Verizon, $299.99 on contract, but with that you also get an extra Battery, a charger for that battery, a Docking Station and a Navigation Dock included! Supposedly, they will be receiving their displays on September 8th, and the phone soon thereafter.
This deal seems to pack in some great value for that $300 bucks. What do you guys think?

Microsoft seems to be stocking up on patents these days, and one of their older applications have been revealed. The above image is one of a few touch screen based gestures that Microsoft claims is their idea. There are over 5 different gestures in this application, but looking at this one, I'm sure we can find how this applies to Android. The patent essentially says swiping from the bezel downward to reveal information or similar content is something Microsoft's created. This gesture is what Android's shade concept is all about and that means, if granted, Microsoft has one more thing to go after OEM's for.
Share your thoughts on Microsoft's tactics below. See more patents at the source!

Now I don't know if this is much of a "news" thing but I'm sure most of us know that long time book store BORDERS is going out of business. Well I've been going to check out what I can find for cheap everyday since I heard this news. I just wanted to point out that I recently bought a Motorola Xoom for 60% off the MSRP. They do have other e-readers in stock but not for long. When I purchased mine, it was the last Motorola Xoom they had in stock.
Like I said, not sure if this is considered BIG news but I thought I'd let the community know.

Most of us have heard the old adage, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," and that looks as if that is exactly what RIM is considering. According to a Bloomberg article, RIM is considering adding Android app support to their future QNX devices. The problem for RIM is that they have poor app support and very few apps available to them. RIM is considering the move in order to spur lagging sales of their Blackberry devices. According to the report, "The feature is said to go live in the QNX-powered PlayBook tablet by the end of the year..." Also, here's a quote from the Bloomberg article with some more details,
This is interesting news for Blackberry users, as this easily signals the first step toward some type of Blackberry-Android hybrid device. Perhaps, by this time next year, RIM will be making Android phones along with HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc.
The Android app player in the new BlackBerrys is the same one that has been built for the PlayBook, and it is being tweaked to fit the different screen size and resolution of various BlackBerry models, one of the people said. RIM plans to have the Android player installed on the QNX phones when they go on sale and not in an upgrade, to avoid criticisms that software upgrades were too slow to come, the person said

The drama over the potentially doctored Samsung pics by Apple just heated up in court this morning. A Dutch website called Webwereld, reported on a live Twitter feed from this morning that was straight out of the Düsseldorf court hearing regarding the Apple vs. Samsung case. During the hearing, a reporter named Andreas Udo de Haes, Tweets the events and arguments of counsel "live", and out of the event comes some fairly startling info. Supposedly, Samsung has found 27 pics that were doctored before Apple presented them in court. Furthermore, as you can see from the pic above, there was a heated exchange between the Apple and Samsung lawyers about the issue.
In the end, the judge decided to temporarily uphold the temporary injunction against Samsung so they can review things further and reconvene on September 9th. Below I have included a link to the Twitter feed so you can read the events and discuss theories amongst yourselves. Don't forget, (for those who don't know), in order to read a Twitter feed in time-line order, read it from the bottom upward.
Also... on a sidenote: Don't forget that next Monday, August 29th, we will be holding a Live report (if possible - shortly after if not) of the press event for the Samsung Mobile Galaxy SII Release in New York City around 6PM EST!

A new report from Droid-Life indicates from a "pilot group" email that the Moto XOOM will soon start receiving its 4G LTE upgrade. The first folks that will get emails with details of sending their Xoom in to be updated will be "government" and "business" users. It wasn't made clear from the report how that is determined exactly. Here's a quote from the Droid-Life article with some details,
This upgrade has been a long time coming, and because of this, the Xoom can't really be called the first 4G LTE Android Tablet anymore, since the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 now has that distinction. Also, there is no word on how soon the "regular folk" will start to get the "upgrade now email", but at least the process is starting and it's better late than never. The pic above is a screenshot of the email.
the upgrade will be free of charge and will be initiated by an email with instructions from Motorola. Along with said email, you will also receive a pre-paid FedEx box to ship your XOOM in with enough packing supplies to make it safe for travel. Moto and Verizon recommend that you back everything up, since the upgrade process will likely require them to wipe your device clean.
