    sprint vs. verizon

im aware that im posting in this forum an off-topic but i have to rant:

been with verizon for more than a year now, 2 android phones and one basic phone = $ 200/mo. for me ($21 in surcharges, $11 in taxes included).

ive felt verizon's been getting pretty fat lately with the massive amount of smartphone activations. ive also felt for a while now that the services are overpriced and its a trend that carriers have jumped on.

so i have unlimited data. but wat sends me over the cliff is that verizon has the nerve to throttle after only 1gb of use. after they introduced tiered data i thought that was expensive ... but after looking at what theyre going to charge for plans and data at the end of june -- its going to be even more expensive ! ($100 for 10gb shared).

so ive been looking at sprint, they offer unlimited messaging, unlimited data, for my setup a 1500 min plan will run me about $15-20 less per month than with verizon right now.

but wat interests me the most is how good is the 3g/4g service in the tri-state ? when they say they dont throttle is that true ? so on 3g the expected bandwidth would be about 1.5 Mbps, is that wat sprint customers see when they do a speedtest whether its at the beginning or end of the monthly cycle ?

what kind of bandwidth can i expect on 4g ?

just my own idle curiosity here... but how do you know your getting throttled after one gig of use?

i've had sprint, their customer service is worse than their cruddy network, and they always put services on my bill i never asked for and refused to credit it. In fact, i got a whole 7 bucks from a class action suit against sprint for it.

That makes 3 of us. I am highly suspect of any concern of throttling at such an extremely low amount of data use, unless you're using 1GB/day or 1GB/hour. There's something wrong here, and I am going out on a limb backing Verizon but I am going to play the Devil's Advocate here and say it's highly unlikely that you are being throttled by the big red Devil.

I just came over to Verizon from sprint. The reason I switched was the 3g was very poor. I would have 4 or 5 bars on my evo 3d and would get about .3-.6mbps download and .1-.3 upload no point in having a smartphone when I could barely load my Facebook feed or watch a YouTube video. I'd check what ppl are getting your area. And I left Verizon in the first place about 2 years ago to go to sprint because it was cheaper. Then realized sprint charges an extra $10 for premium data which made the price pretty close to what I pay on Verizon.

I know I'm throttled after about 3gb on Verizon. It's been going on for at least 6 months now. My wife can be sitting right next to me and we can download the same youtube video and hers will stream through without a problem, mine takes forever to load. Same with webpages etc. She rarely uses 3-4 gb a month, I average 7-8. When my cycle starts over each month I notice a huge increase in speed.

I have read of situations like yours (and I believe you), and I've also read of people who use 20GB or 30GB per month (or more...in one case I remember reading them using over 100GB/month in torrents), and they notice no data speed decrease. It's quite possible they are throttling in some areas and not others, perhaps due to excessive load on certain towers. Each tower can only carry so much data before it's forced to throttle (balance) the throughput to have the most efficient use of bandwidth. Perhaps there are a large number of heavy users in your area, perhaps your account is flagged as a "heavy user" and so the towers will throttle you before they will your wife. I don't know...just speculating.

That's quite possible. We're expecting LTE in our area by the end of summer & I'm definitely looking forward to that!
