What are you using to download them, just the android browser? Have you tried using a PC and transferring them over?
Do the filesizes line up at least?
Are you able to open the zip files in an android app, or does it say "invalid zip"?

custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)

Axi0m sums ok for me... i downloaded of his site, i have a feeling that what messes you up is the 3g download, the file might change its value during the process, i don't think the source of the download matters in this case...
