Simple question. Can an app control the menu, home, back, and search keys? Would root be required?

good question...however this really only effected me when i first bought the phone and had to get used to where the buttons where on the phone since they dont light up for you without first pressing on one of them. Honestly I would still like the advantage of having these light up so maybe someone can help us out here.

I think this would be a great opportunity for message and call notifications given the lack of an LED notification as hardware!

The soft keys not staying lit is a bug that should be fixed when we get 2.2
If you're looking for a notification light, there is a program out there that puts alert icons on your screen while it is off.
Emails will put a colored square on the screen, missed calls will put the missed call icon, text messages will put an envelope on the screen.
It seems to be a decent app and has worked great for me so far.
