    well its noobie time.
    I purchased a used i510, & since the warranty doesn't transfer, there is no reason not to root.
    apparently the root methods vary between "ed1" & "ed2", how do I know which one I have?
    the phone declares
    hardware= i510.06
    firmware = 2.3.6
    baseband = i510.06v.FP1
    kernel = 2.6.35.7-FP1
    build = SCH-I510.FP1

    when I touch "check for udates" ( with internet access turned off - don't want to update, if it isn't already!), the phone claims to be up to date.
    thanks for your help & advice.

    Ed1 and ed2 are really old builds. You have the latest build which is fp1. Here's a guide to root fp1: http://www.chargeforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8357
