some questions about backing up and other things

i have a few questions. i rooted my motorola droid the other day and i'm still a little confused about some things...

    1. is there a difference between doing a nandroid backup, backing up using rom manager, and doing a backup using titanium backup?

    2. lets say i do a backup. the next day, i do another backup, and for the next 5 days i do a backup everyday. if i restore my phone to the third backup i did, will all the backups i did after that get erased? or can i go back to the third backup and then go back to the seventh one again?

    3. i've heard that every time you switch roms you have to wipe data and cache - is there a way to keep apps and settings so i don't have to start all over again every time i switch roms?

    4. when i first rooted my phone i did a lot of nandroid backups but didn't get the option to name them or anything. if i have to go back one day and restore one of them, is there a way to know what's on each of them? cause i can't remember when i did a nandroid backup so if one day i wanted to go back to stock, i wouldn't know which backup to restore. or if i wanted to go back to a different step i wouldn't know which backup to restore.

    5. what's busybox? i keep hearing about that but i don't know what it is....

    6. if i wanted to switch roms, how do i know what kernel to use and what mhz to put my phone to?

Nandroid backup with sprecovery will not work with clockwork recovery (what rom manager uses) and vice vesa. Titanuim backup back ups apps and settings for apps.
    2. lets say i do a backup. the next day, i do another backup, and for the next 5 days i do a backup everyday. if i restore my phone to the third backup i did, will all the backups i did after that get erased? or can i go back to the third backup and then go back to the seventh one again?
You have a nandroid folder you can access next time you go into your sdcard look for the nandroid folder and you will see all your backup folders. I normally delete it after the 5th backup because the more backups the more space you take up on your sdcard. Also you can copy a nandroid backup folder on to your computer
    3. i've heard that every time you switch roms you have to wipe data and cache - is there a way to keep apps and settings so i don't have to start all over again every time i switch roms?
Wipe data and cache gives your device a clean start. You can backup apps and settings with titanium backup.

    4. when i first rooted my phone i did a lot of nandroid backups but didn't get the option to name them or anything. if i have to go back one day and restore one of them, is there a way to know what's on each of them? cause i can't remember when i did a nandroid backup so if one day i wanted to go back to stock, i wouldn't know which backup to restore. or if i wanted to go back to a different step i wouldn't know which backup to restore.
the nandroid files are nemed my data time. but again the a rule of thumb for backups. When you update and you add your kernels and get every thing good to go. Make a backup. Then copy that backup folder on to your computer. Example: the most recent froyo that was released today i updated, installed my kernel and made a backup named it (froyolatest). After I reboot I mount my phone and copy the file on to my laptop and delted the last froyo nandroid file.
    5. what's busybox? i keep hearing about that but i don't know what it is....

    6. if i wanted to switch roms, how do i know what kernel to use and what mhz to put my phone to?
    Follow the devs instructions.

    my response in red.

when you restore a nandroid backup you do not have to wipe data and cache.
