My first Droid was damaged and my new one came with 2.1 update 1. I do have to say that this new phone is getting excellent battery life just "as is". I do miss loading Roms and all the customization that rooting allows, but for now I just am amazed with how this thing is running "stock."

I wonder if a 2.1 ota UPGRADE is just not as solid as a FRESH 2.1 install. Assuming thats what Verizon did with mine. (I got it mailed to me after talking with Verizon on the phone, not from a store.)

I'm sure I'll root at some point when I get bored with stock, so thanks for the instructions.

You can just root and just o/c the official 2.1. That is what I am doing. It has been smooth and if I ever decide to flash roms again, it will be awhile cuz Im liking my set up, all i have to do is install it.

What i like about my setup is it looks exactly like the 2.1. When I go in to about i see "ese 81 2.1 update -1" , and nothing else.

    Okay...
I completed a clean root of my 2.1 Droid.

Now...minor detail...Where dd my appps go?
Should I have done a backup of some sort before? I can still see some of the apps on the SD card.
Do I hsve to re-downlaod all of them form the market?
How about the ones I purchased?

Will I Have to go thru this everytime I change ROMs?

If they did not auto install then yes they are on the market under downloads. Paid apps always are there.

Your apps should auto download, with time. The market supposedly knows which ones you have on your phone. Just like you aren't always notified of updates yet if you check downloads sometimes they are available, eventually you do get notified up updates.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

    Now another issue.
My battery life has changed. it has gone from good to terrible. It died overnight from a full charge.
I use to get a lot longer.

    Any ideas what caused this?

I don't think it was the rooting. I haven't rooted yet,and I've had the same thing--charge the Droid, shut the phone off for the night, turn it on the next day and it's @ 70% or less...? I've been wondering if some combinations of apps can make the Droid hang on shutdown. I am interested to see if anyone has any insight on this.
I'd like to find out before I root if possible. ..

I have had my Droid for about 2 months and have had a "respectable" battery life.
This thing went frome full charge to DEAD in under 8 hours.
Usually, if I forget to plug it in at night, I still have about 60% the next day.

Had you installed any new apps before the battery drop?
