What I meant to say is that's a more drastic scary way to do it. Is there a safer easier fix

Are any of the files listed with the extension in the folder you see or just the one you renamed?

I reformatted the SD card. The SD card is blank except for this Zip file on it.
Hit clear cache partition
Then hit data factory reset
Then hit install
Then allow update.zip installation
Then SD card update.zip deprecated
Still getting
Install from SD card
Finding update package
Opening update package
verifying update package
E:cant open /sdcard/update.zip
No such file or directory installation aborted
Empty SD Card with just that one zip file.
Sprecovery 2e. 0 .99.3b
I redownloaded the zip file twice just incase it was a bad zip file and that doesn't seem to be the problem

Ok but you haven't verified with your computer whether the file is update.zip or update.zip.zip
