Maxx is locked up and soft reset doesn't work

I figured it may be the charger I'm using since its not the one that came with the phone. But what I'm worried about is wwhy the soft reset won't work so now my phone is black screen like its off but I can't turn it back on. Any thoughts on

Every time my phone does that (once a week), I hold down both volume buttons and the power button for 10 seconds. This shuts my phone down. I can then power on normally. Let me know if that helps.

That's what the soft reset is. I try the combo of buttons and nothing happens. And I know the phone is charged because this morning the alarm went off and I saw it was charged. When I got out of the shower it was unresponsive and the reset did nothing.

When you plug in the phone do you get the battery symbol letting you know that it is charging?
