This isn't the first time I've seen this type of thread. To be honest, it makes more sense to give it to a 5 year old then to a 15 year old IMHO. However I wouldn't give it to neither.

i personally never would give a smart phone to any kid.. If they want a smart phone they can get a job and pay the bill.. If I approve it... but that just me..

I think 5 is too young. When my daughters were 13 and 12, we got them their first cell phones for Christmas. The wife and I wrapped them and put them under the tree. Christmas morning I slipped off and called one of them. They jumped up and started screaming! Good times!
So I gotta ask what phones you got for them?

I completely agree with this. If they want one, get a job and pay for it. That way they appreciate it more because they bought it. And even if they can for whatever reason afford it I would make them show they could be responsible enough not to cause me to have an extremely high bill due to their over texting or calling.
And at five? Not a snowballs chance. I wouldn't even consider it until 15. Maybe one of those child phones that make only emergency calls and can't call out.
There's always a chance, Doctor, as long as one can think.
