    Formatted internel hd?

I Just installed ubuntu on my external hard drive. I had to format my
external to ext format. It worked fine and ubuntu installed fine. I restarted
and grub bootloader came up and I clicked windows vista launcher. The only
thing that came up was gateway recovery. What the hell happened? I never
    touched my internel drive.

Can your BIOS see the external hard drive? Grub probably doesnt know what's out there anymore. I've never seen anyone install an OS on an external hard drive....

I couldnt tell you, it really depends on who makes your chipset.

Either way, how did you install Ubuntu? Did you let it manually chose partitions or what?

Well I had to choose to erase everything off my external drive and then installed to that.

Sounds about right. You cant put the /boot partition on the external and expect everything to be OK without the external plugged in....

Again, probably because you borked the boot loader, and it doesnt know where anything is on your hard drive.
