Internet Nicknames - How Not to Make A Friend (small rant)

One of the things I've never been able to understand is why some people choose their nicknames. I've seen threads where people discuss this but some of the names I see make you dislike the person before they even say anything.

If your name is "Puppy Killer" (I doubt it's allowed) you're probably not exactly setting up a good impression. "Ih8evry1" wouldn't go over big either.

I usually will look to see the new people coming in and as much as I want to welcome everyone sometimes those type of names just keep me from doing it.

These are my own thoughts, and of course you're free to pick whatever name you'd like. I like the way this forum has taken shape, it's got great mods, and great people in it who like to be helpful. But just like anywhere else you go in life making a good first impression is helpful.

Attention getting, yes indeed, that they are. But I don't know really I think I'm the same on the internet as I am in real life. I can be direct, even tough but at the same time I try to be understanding. You know some people ask some really dumb questions and I don't become insulting to them (at least not intentionally). That's pretty much how I am in real life.

I'm glad you can admit it. Haha! [Totally messing with you. To be honest though, I rarely even look at the name. I'm more interested in the question someone has or the advice they can give, but I do agree there are some really disturbing names out there...]

I too rarely look at people's names. My username MontyMo is my first name and the first 2 letters of my last name. I would like it just to be Monty, but once or twice when registering Monty has been taken, so I chose MontyMo. I now use MontyMo on most sites to be consistent.

Jonny Kansas is a nickname bestowed upon me by friends when I moved to Michigan, because I like Johnny Cash and my name is Jon and I'm from Kansas. Haha! I also use it on Xbox Live and a few other places...

I do look at the names, because I want to know the people in the forum. It's what makes up the community. Specially those that post regularly, one's that seem knowledgeable. Now your name doesn't jump out at me because it's just a regular name, but I'll probably remember you because of this conversation. It's just how my brain works. And I won't think about you in a negative way.
