    Is this a scam?

To avoid interruption of your Verizon Wireless service, please call 888-821-0284 or press the send key on your phone. This is a free text message.

Got this as a text message. I have read stuff online about it but have gotten mixed responces.

^That's a usually really good site for finding if a particular number is a scam/telemarketer/etc. In this particular instance, there is a lot of back and forth banter, some claiming one way, some another. So, as some have stated, just be safe. Use 611 or online system to check on your account, rather than the provided number.
