A need for Apple/iPhone - Troubled times at Verizon

Those that have been saying "Verizon doesn't need Apple" may need to have another look (much to the dismay of many of us)...

And YES this is for Verizon as a WHOLE but still... increase sales and contracts from the iPhone will help the company as a whole.

The wireless division was not the reason for the loss. Wireless is still thriving.

Yes.... thus why I specifically said "this is for the WHOLE company"... but it's still a company and strengthening the Wireless division will help offset the losses of the other(s). And serves the point of showing just WHY VZW likely will try (or tried) to get the iPhone.

first of all $653 million is not that much of a loss. The wireless division is not responsible for the loss either. Verizon does not need the iphone. Having it would give verizon probably the best lineup we've ever seen...
Palm Pre Plus (out right now)
    Moto Droid (out right now)
Apple Iphone (to be announced most likely)
Htc Nexus One (google said their device will strive on many carriers)
Saygus Vphone (revealed pictures with verizon branding)

If these all come out... god help at&t

I hate getting the daily downer on the economy but Big Red does not need the darn lPhone. I will promise you that this deal will not go down.

So now that I stuck my neck out liked that expect the announcement to arrive in 24 hours.

The droid brought numbers to the wireless divison, but no doubt the iphone will add more. With that said you can have all the phones in the world, until people are back to work and earning money, companies are going to have problems. And verizon cutting jobs is just putting more people out of work. (ps that statement was not an open invitation for who is at fault for the economy being what it is, not looking for a political war)

Wouldn't it be good for Verizon to get the iPhone?

It would just mean more options when the our "new every two" comes up, and who knows whether Android x.x or iPhone 4 will be better at that time? And the competition of having the other hot smartphone on the best network would push Google as well.

The iPhone wouldn't really have an effect on this. Verizon is already the #1 Wireless carrier in the US. This is probably due to less and less people using landline phones and their failing DSL internet. This might cause Verizon to stop offering some services (such as landline or DSL) but for a company that is already the #1 in America, getting another phone isn't going to resurrect Verizon Communications.
