The iPhone and Droid use the same Gorilla Glass on the screen. The only thing that will scratch the glass is anything harder than the glass itself such as if you let someone use your Droid who's wearing diamond earings. If they accidentally brushed off hard enough on the glass surface, that could scratch it.

That's because sand is harder than glass which I stated earlier. Sand are little crystals much like a diamond is a crystal (except for an uncut diamond which looks more like a rock). LOL

And it depends on the type of sand because some glass are made from sand.

Well, to the OP, just make sure you watch out who uses your phone if they are wearing earings. For the most part, the glass on the Droid should be fine as long as it doesn't take much abuse. Even though the Gorilla Glass is chemically treated to be stronger than regular glass, you should still take precaution on how you handle your device.

Welcome to the forum, dbyrd! Gorilla glass is chemically strengthened. Glass is a brittle material and brittle materials are extremely strong under compression but extremely weak under tension. When you chemically temper a glass, you immerse it in a salt bath and you stuff larger ions in all the surfaces and put them all under compression.

What’s unique about Gorilla Glass is that because of its inherent composition, it can allow those larger ions to penetrate the surface more deeply to increase the compression tolerance and tolerate deeper scratches. Basically, the compression pushes a flaw back. It’s harder to break from a deeper scratch.

And I wear diamond earrings - not a scratch on mine after a little better than three months.
