Introduction and question

Hi! I just got my new phone and love it. However, I'm having a couple issues with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The first is that my sound volume all but disappears. I have it set to the highest setting but it is still so soft I can't hear the phone ring, alerts, etc. I saw the thread about a battery pull. Do I have to do this every time my volume disappears?

The second problem is that my screen stays dark on a phone call until the other person hangs up. This is a major problem for when I'm leaving voice mails and such, as I can't hang up without turning my screen off, then on again, unlocking, going to phone and hanging up. Help please!
