Hello & a Question

I was checking out the Droid today; thinking about buying one.

My current phone has the ability to block anyone who is not in my contact list from being able to dail me directly. Everyone else gets bumped to voice mail. This is a great feature - since the functionality is on the phone and the web-based voice mail is free it's painless. Also since the phone number was originally my plain old telephone service number, it saves me some unproductive conversations.

Checking out the Droid - it's not clear you can block people in this way. There's nothing in the user manual about it. Is there someone here who can answer this question? Is there a better forum to post this in?

Yup..you can. You add a contact, then you can edit it and tell them to go straight to voice mail.

I think I did not explain my question well.

My question put another way

if (you are not in my contacts)
{
you go to voice mail
}
else // I know you
{
the phone rings
}

I think what you are saying is
------------------------------
if (you are in my contacts)
{
I can control the call
}
else // I don't know you
{
you get through to me
}

This means I can get things like wrong numbers, phone surveys & etc.
My non-super phone implements the stuff above at no cost. Can the Droid beat that?

the phones going to ring. You can ignore and send it to voicemail. I haven't found a way to send all calls from non contacts go to Voicemail on it

Here's a thought -

There is an app called CallFilter lite , it's free in the Market, which lets you set up a black list and block unknown/restricted numbers. That doesn't sound like quite what you're looking for.

You could set your standard ringtone to an mp3 that is basically 1 second of silence, then assign your current ringtone to all of your contacts.

Of course, I'm sure that sometime in the next couple of weeks, something like CallFilter lite will get a whitelisting option.

Thanks. That fueled the solution (and the purchase)

I set my default ring tone to silent.
settings -> sound and display -> phone ringtone -> silent

and then set the specific sound for the lucky few....
contacts -> (the contact) -> Options -> ringtone -> picked a sound
