    WiFi vs Cell Use

Hi. I'm a new Droid owner and would like to know how do I use the wifi function without using the cell. In other words, when browsing, how do I know if I'm using wifi or cell service? Sorry for the silly question....

Can't say 100%, but I would think wifi trumps 3G... meaning, it will not even try to use 3G for browsing if wifi is on and connected.

On the top right of your screen there are indicators showing you which connection is in use. When the 3G cell service is being used, it says "3G". When the wifi is connected, the 3G indicator goes away and you see the wifi indicator which looks like a signal strength indicator.

    This.

If you have wireless on it doesn't try to access the internet via 3G. Although, I'm sure if you were connected to a wireless network that didn't actually have internet it would use 3G but I'm not certain.

I have to say i'm impressed..I just got connected to my wifi network, but had no trouble making a phone call. Very slick.

Anyone have any experiences if the wifi drains battery much faster?

In my experience with WiFi things - like an ITouch and a Kindle as well - it does drain the battery faster when on all the time - as it is always 'searching' - always working - I usually keep it off unless I need to use it - like to download something - easy enough to turn on when needed

Long press on a home screen, go to widgets, power control. It'll throw up some buttons to easily turn on/off wifi, BT, GPS, brightness, and sync.

Wi-Fi does drain the batter faster so turn it off if you need to conserve the batt.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you want buttons to easily turn those things off and on I recommend Beautiful Widgets from the market. You will get a Clock/Weather/Calendar Wiget (big and small) Plus buttons to turn on and off Bluetooth, Brightness, GPS, Plane Mode, Silent, Vibrate, and WiFi. The app only costs $1.50 and is awesome! It is also skinnable. Here is an example of what one of the skins looks like for the Clock/Weather/Calendar widget :
