Tomorrow ask a moderator on here to walk you through it on Google chat. That's what I did, it's amazing how much more awesome your phone is after doing it

Good advice. ^
If you can't wait and want to do some prep reading, this thread is pretty good, perhaps a touch dated but the basics are in there.
Welcome to the community!
Welcome to the forums! Good luck with rooting your X!
Even if someone talks you through you need to know what you are doing. Try reading some of these guides over at droid x forurs before attempting anything. Also very helpful is to watch a video of the rooting process using z4root which is the easiest root method. There are dozens on you tube. One done by Xdroidrom is particularly good. Its the one I found that helped me root a few months ago. Sorry my links are incomplete but you should be able to find them easily enough.

You can find all these at droid x forums stickied in forum/android development /hacking and hacking guides also under rescue squad guides. With these you can learn to root, back up your system and apps and also find out what your can do with root.
Programs you need:
Z4root -see above
Droid x bootstrapper-market
Titanium Backup. Or my back up pro-market
Good luck. Once you're comfortable there is always help available but you need to know what the process is first!
