    Data plans are too limiting

I'm sitting here contemplating the feasibility of me getting the Motorola Xoom on launch day this Thursday for the subsidized price of $599 with a 2 year contract because I actually plan on using this device on 3G/4G coverage as much as I do my phone.

For research purposes I checked how much data I use on my phone over the past 4 billing cycles and found that my data usage has gone up from what it used to be. Up to almost 2GB of usage one month and with the other 3 hovering between 1GB and 1.5GB.

The fact that you can get a 1GB data plan for the Motorola Xoom at $20 a month is laughable. That is never going to be enough for me, or even someone who uses less data than the average person. Even 3GB for $35 is pushing it.

I want to be able to use the Xoom for what it was designed for. I want to play multi-player games while on the road. I want to stream Netflix movies while be driven across state lines (hopefully sooner rather than later). I want to browse the web in all it's glory and watch YouTube videos where ever I please. But doing any number of these is going to have me easily pushing past 3GB on 3G, not even to mention when it transitions to faster 4G.

I don't jailbreak my phones, I don't find illegal ways around data caps, but I feel I'm being punished for people who do. How someone could use enough data to the point these companies feel they need to limit the usage is beyond me. I listen to pandora radio every time I'm in my car. I browse the web over 3G when I could easily turn on wifi. I play online poker while traveling. And I only use 2GB.

Is anyone else as enraged as I am over how they dangle these capped data plans in front of our faces at the release of such a powerful device? The legitimate possibilities are endless, until they cap us.

Very simple solution..wifi tether off your phone and the 20.00 plan will be just fine, use the 3g/4g only when needed

My Moto droid does not have tethering or hot spot capability unless I root it, and then still not legally. Also I will note that I have VZW if that was not assumed already.

There is always the 5gb plan for 50.00 or the 10gb for 80.00. Plus, the overage is only 10.00 per gb. Meaning if you were on the 35.00 plan and went over your cap it is not going to sink you financially.

Reluctantly I'm going to try and start with the 1 gb plan and monitor it from month to month. I'm going to leave the wifi on as much as possible. But I am definitely getting it today.

A data plan for a tablet is rediculous. The technology that this is eventually going to replace is the functionality of a laptop. Would you buy a data plan for a net book? Even the idea of buying something you can only use a fraction of the time is cause for a headache. I certainly wouldn't buy a car that had a gas limit.

Verizon isn't limiting the amount of data you can get because people use too much. They're doing it to make money! This is why people have no problem with rooting and tethering for free. I tether every now and then and I use less data per month than you do. So by your reasoning you're the reason that Verizon is charging so much, not me. If you want to bend over and grab your ankles for Verizon by all means go ahead, but I refuse to do so. I could see if I was abusing the system; but like I said, I use less data than you do. IMO Wifi is the best way to go and then just use the 3g/4g when you HAVE to and you should be fine.

Picked mine up and took advantage of the employee pricing ($499) and picked up the 3gb plan for $17/mo in conjunction with my tethering app =)

If you use tethering then you're wasting 17/month on the data plan...........
