It's a shame you have to use a hack to enable this. It would be nice little feature to have.

Menu>
Settings>
Language & keyboard>
Device keyboard(built-in keyboard settings)
then you have 3 check boxes for "Auto-Replace" , "Auto-Cap" , and "Auto-Punctuate"

I guess anything more than that will require a hack or app.
