Silencing notificationz R2D2

I can only silence notifications if I silence the master volume. It's not an option to silence in the sound settings. Apps I have tried have not been able to override the android setting. Example : I change gmail setting to no silent with status bar popup. However, I still get the default spunky sound when the popup comes up. If I try another app to choose the main notification ringtone, it doesn't stick. Just goes back to spunky. Any ideas?
