I was able to sbf back to 3.8.7 (couldn't find a working 4.8.6 sbf link) after updating and losing root. There are other threads showing how to update to 4.7.3 and keep root. I'm on rooted 4.7.3 now and it is really great for battery and smoothness. I like it more than any other configuration I've used for daily driver. And I have used ALL of them...

I'm hestitant because of the unknown origin of the file. The process doesn't seem any harder than flashing a Blackberry OS. With BB though I could download the files right from the provider. I truly don't know where any of these came from. I just can't risk bricking my phone right now.

The MotoFail app is supposed to be able to root just about any Motorola Android phone.... Has anyone here tried it?
This article talks about it:
Easily Root your DROID 4 & 3, RAZR, RAZR MAXX, and BIONIC
And here's the link to the actual program:

nope it didnt work it says system read only?
What I had to do to regain root rights was to:
1) flash back down to 4.6.8. Youtube will help here.
2) root
3) download voodoo OTA rootkeeper and backup the root
4) Update
5)Open up VooDoo and reinstate the root
Following the youtube video made the process pretty easy.
Best 'o luck to y'all
