New to droid - some issues

I am new to my droid pro. So far I like it but I am having some issues. I am hoping people here can help. I have not rooted the droid (yet).

1.) When I first got it I could hook it up to my PC via a USB cable and add stuff to it. After the lasted update, I get a mtp usb device failed error. I can't seem to get it to install. What the heck happened?

2.) Yesterday morning I grabbed the phone and noticed that all my contacts have doubled. Each entry has a duplicate. How can I get rid of them easily. This is a work phone and I have over 300 contacts.

3.) My contacts don't appear to be syncing with Google. any idea as to why? I thought I had it set up too.

    4. ) If I root, can I get better control over what is running? I seems to have some crappy apps (Music, City ID) that are native and always turning on. I have set the task manager to auto kill, but then that has to run.

    Thanks

Here are some "quick" thoughts. No guarantee that any of this solves your issues, but we'll give it a try: Problem 1-Make sure you have downloaded and installed the latest Motorola drivers for your usb connection...MOTO web site. Unmount your sd card and power off...all the way off. Unplug you usb connection. Then remove your sd card and reinsert it. Power back on. Then mount your sd card. When you connect your usb cable to your phone you should get a notification in the notification bar that you have a usb connection. Press on the notification and select what you want to do...there are three or four options. As a last resort, try a different cable if you have one, or a different computer if nothing else works. Problem 2 & 3-When you bought your phone, did the Verizon people transfer contacts from your old phone to the pro? My wife has an HTC phone...when purchased the Verizon people transfered contacts from her old phone to her new phone. Those contacts will not sync with gmail because they are not considered "gmail contacts" and therefore will not sync. This could explain the double entries and why some contacts will not sync. Problem 4-Depends on what you want out of root. You can move/rename/delete apps when rooted, but be careful it could cause you problems if you're not familiar with the interaction between different apps on the phone. For instance...check menu>settings>location and security settings. If all those services are checked then one or more apps associated with knowing/providing your location, like a weather app, will start and run without your knowledge. So, if you root, be careful about what you freeze, rename, move and certainly about what you delete. Check the settings on your phone, you may have a setting that is starting and running unwanted apps.

I have exported from the phone to google. So all my contacts are now in google. How can I delete all the contacts on my phone so I can resync it without doing a factory reset.

Edit: I am REALLY frustrated. I exported my google contacts. then I found an app to delete all of my contacts off of the phone. I ran that and deleted my contacts. now it won't sync with google. I keep looking at my accounts and it says to sync with google. But it won't. It does appear to be syncing with backup assistant, but I don't want to use that. what the hell is going on?

I don't know if this is the best way, but it is one way that is pretty fast and simple and will insure that your gmail contacts match your phone contacts. In gmail, after editing out all dubs and unwanted contacts, create a csv file and save to your computer somewhere. Then, in gmail, delete all contacts. Give gmail some time to delete those contacts on your phone. Check you phone contacts, if not empty, then delete the remaining contacts that are on your phone. After all contacts have been deleted, import into gmail the cvn file that you previously created. Give some time for gmail to sync the new contact list to your phone...it won't take long. This is my approach...someone else may have a better idea.
