Looking at the Pro, but I have a few questions

Hey everyone,

I am new here. I currently have a Samsung Rogue and am looking to upgrade to a smartphone. Right now I am looking at the Droid Pro, the Droid Incredible or the Pre 2. There are a few things that I am looking for in a phone so I thought I'd ask here some questions about the Droid Pro.

I know it comes with Quickoffice, but am not sure if it is the free version (edit only) or full. I would like to be able to create documents on my phone so having the full version would be a big plus.

This also means that I would be doing a lot of typing on my phone so I wanted to know what has your experience been typing on the pros keyboard?

By no means am I a business user though, I am a college student so I will also use it for other purposes as well. For those of you who use it for similar purposes, do you find it to be adequate in this regard? And how do you find the camera to be? I don't need super high quality but would like to have good image quality

Finally, I just wanted to see how future proof this device is, by that I mean is there a good chance that it will see Gingerbread and future updates?

I know have asked a lot of questions, but I just want to make sure my first smartphone is a good one. I appreciate any help.

The Keyboard thing is really a personal choice. My wife loves hers, and I cant stand it -- vice versa with my D2. You're gonna have to make that choice on your own.

The Camera quality is comparable to other phones -- nothing to jump up and down about, but it works well.

As far as future proofing things, no one can tell you that -- that being said, Motorola has done a good job getting us 2.1 and 2.2. No ideas about 3 and beyond. Time will tell.

Welcome Shield! DroidForums is a good place to get info and has some good folks that will help you out...

LtKen is right on the keyboard...really a personal choice...I do a good bit of typing and got fed up trying to type on a touchscreen....I had to have physical keys...

I started with a Droid(1) last year and realized immediately that the slide out keyboard was completely useless...keys too close together, too flat, and off-centered (because of d-pad) made it even more difficult to use...rarely used the keyboard and relied on only touchscreen typing....Droid 2 was supposed to have solved most of the keyboard problems, but haven't used one personally....

Keys on Droid Pro are a little cramped, but I've been able to adapt well and completely prefer over any on-screen keyboards....my main motivation was that I did not want to use a touchscreen only phone and didn't want a slide out keyboard...with no other Droid phones with a physical portrait keyboard, I'm fine with the keys and with the smaller, less resolution screen...

Quick Office appears to be "Pro" version, as you can create new documents...not just read existing...

from using my Pro for 2 weeks..very impressed with the speed and most reviews show blazing benchmarks to back it up....I would definitely recommend the Pro over the Pre/Pre 2, and the Incredible is also a good device, but comparing the Pro to a touchscreen device is a little difficult...some people want the large, bright, hi-res screen for videos, etc....that's not what the Pro was built for....

the Pro appears to be able to receive future Android updates without any issue....really the only thing that may "date" the phone is once the 4G devices start coming out...

The keyword isn't bad.. it takes a while to get use to.. I suggest you trim your nails as short as possible to type faster.

If it wasn't for the lack of apps, id recommend the Pre 2, Pres OS puts everyones OS to shame (Android, iOS, etc.) But the lack of apps is what kills is for them. Also you get a lot more customization on the Android. A higher resolution and bigger screen would be nice on this thing but, the fact that I have a portray style keyboard on this thing makes up for it.

I love the keyboard. My hands are a little bit smaller, probably why I haven't had any problems with it at all.

I too came from the d1, where I never used the keyboard. I had to get it because I couldn't find an incredible anywhere. Personally, I find this to be the best phone I've owned, I have no complaints about anything on it.

Hey I came from the Rogue to the Pro and I think it was a great decision.
First it took me like two days to get used to the keyboard from my slide out keyboard. Now I love the Pro keyboard. I never use the on screen keyboard.
As a college student I find the Quickword very useful. Especially since it is the end of the semester and I have tons of work that I like to view and edit on the go.
Now for the camera it takes good pictures if you have additional light and not just flash on the phone. I did like my camera on the Rogue a little better even though it was 3 MP.

There's always something good coming out lol.. just a few months ago the incredible was the phone to get on verizon.. now it seems like its the droid 2 and droid x. Im sure there will be other phones down the road..

MO is right...if you can hold off a few months you will have quite a few to pick from... and still can go with the Droid Pro if you want....it will still be the only physical portrait keyed Android phone available....

I was hoping the HTC Merge would drop before my 30 day on my Pro was up...that looks like a very interesting phone, but again completely different from the Pro....

with 4g coming, along with the Merge, Nexus S, and larger Moto phones you will have some great phones to choose from in a short period of time...
