The general rule is to avoid task killers. The Android OS is able to figure out what is needed. A runaway app, maybe, but not day to day. There's some more information at Fresh Rom – CDMA Android Development » FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android and Android Task Killers Explained: What They Do and Why You Shouldn't Use Them

The built-in 'Task Manager' in your app drawer is more than sufficient to kill a runaway app if necessary. It shows everything running, with an option to show system core apps and an option to notify of high cpu usage. It allows for auto-end on apps of your choice. I don't recommend you auto-kill anything.
Thanks! So that would mean an easy battery saver as well?

I had installed an app that killed the current app when you long pressed the back key. I can't find it now. Anyone know which ROM that could be?

You can give it a shot (maybe a week) to see if it works. If it's saving battery by killing apps then I'd say no because the Android OS would start that app up again, using power in the process. I did see it in the Market (hate the name Play Store) and it doesn't look like it does it that way.
Long press back key to kill app.
I just found where the setting is to enable it:
Settings/ developer options/ Kill App Back Button.
Answered my own question
I love that feature!
