    Re: Newbie Question Re: Update

I try to do an update through my Bionic and it keeps saying no updates available. The phone supposedly is running 2.3.4

I see posts that the most up to date update is 5.9 something.....

Am I doing something wrong or missing a step to updating my phone?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

You're looking at the wrong numbers. 2.3.4 is the version of Android you are on. It is a version of Gingerbread. You are referring to the system version with your "5.9 something..." reference. The official version is 5.5.893, but many people (such as myself) have loaded the 5.9.901 leaked update. It has not been officially sent out OTA for all users, so that's why it is telling you that your phone is up to date. Even after the update, your Android version will still read 2.3.4. It will not go up until the ICS update. Also, you may have heard about 5.9.902. None of us have actually seen that version, so disregard all info on it until further notice. There ya go!

    Welcome to the forums!

    A bit about OTA updates.

First they are RANDOM; so random that if you bought 2 Bionics at the same time, one could get the update long before the other.

Second is that they are mandatory (unless you're rooted and can get around it). When you see a notification to download (or install) and decline, it'll ask again in an hour.

Third is that they can arrive in the background. What you'd see is a question on if you want to install it (rather than download and install).

And finally, when you check for an update, you are pinging the carrier, who checks to see if you're scheduled to receive it. If you are, then you'll get notice that an update is available to download. This means that if you're scheduled to get the update on, say, February 28 at 3:47am, your phone will say that it's "up to date" until then despite the fact that others on this forum had been getting it since the 13th.
