I guess I'm getting an X2 today and sell it back to them when the Bionic comes out. I'll get $300 for the X2 and use it for the Bionic.

You know what my concern about this is, and I'm sure it's been posted somewhere in the forum but theres so much now it's hard to find the info. I'm just worried that I upgrade to an X2 to lock in unlimited data...then I buy a bionic or whatever 4g phone retail. I buy my Bionic and try to activate it then Verizon will says something about 4g and 3g being different codes even though they are the same plan, and that I will have to use a new data plan for my bionic. If you think about it it makes sense. Right now I'm paying $30.00 a month for unlimited 3G data on my Envtouch the same as most of you are paying 30.00 a month for 3G smartphone data. It's still just data...same as what verizon says for 3g vs. 4g data right now. They say this but yet they are already screwing me by saying if I don't upgrade to a smartphone by the 7th I have to switch to a new plan when I'm already paying the same amount everyone else is for unlimited data but my unlimited data doesn't qualify??? I thought it was all just data!!!
I think Verizon is sneaky and will pull something on me and other people when they upgrade to a 4g device or just buy one out right..they will give the same line they gave me about my feature phone.."well it's a different code in the system so it is different, you will have to use a new plan"
I'm running out of time now as well..I don't even want to buy a phone off ebay because if it doesn't get here in time I'm screwed. I have an early upgrade note placed in my account through verizon which I will probably use because my real upgrade date isn't till August. I'm so paranoid about them pulling something like this that I will probably end up buying one of the crappy 4g phones they have now just so I know there will not be any kind of loop hole they can pull on me when I buy a good 4g phone. I can see it already.."you locked in unlimted data on a 3g phone, upgrading to a 4g phone is a different code in our system so you would fall into the new pricing. You can use another 3g device of your liking though!"

Your question has been brought up a lot. I'm just going to give you the nice answer since they really is a lot of unorganized data and no one has made a FAQ yet. You'll be fine. Data is data so even if you get a 3G smartphone now and decide to upgrade later, it will still be unlimited. As someone else said, not all the 4G areas have been deployed yet so how can they make you go on tiered if you upgrade when 4G isn't everywhere yet? That just wouldn't make sense. So you'll be fine but if you really don't trust Verizon, get a 4G phone on July 6th and either return in before 15 (or 30 if you bought it from Bestbuy) days or sell it once the Bionic comes out.
You should do what you think best but, although I agree they will try to screw us any chance they get, I don't think you have to worry about this 3g or 4 g being different plans.
The plan is called "unlimited data for smartphones" or something very close (actually there is a cap at 5Gb where they can throttle you if they want to). This plan gives you 3G data where available and 1xRTT or 2G data when 3g isn't available. These new phones will provide the ability to connect to 4G data when available, which is not really that widespread across the network yet. If 4G isn't available you will connect to 3G or 2G data.
They don't have different plans now for 2G vs. 3G and I doubt they will have different plans for 4G.
well I took the plunge and decided instead of using my upgrade I would buy a OG droid. I found one on ebay brand new, bid on it, and got it for 122.00. I'll mess around with it until the bionic comes out. I'm kind of excited about the purchase even though the phone is a couple years old. It'll be my first droid and I'm looking forward to messing around with rooting, overclocking, and roms. It'll give me a good understand of android before I get a new phone anyway! I thought long and hard about getting the x2 on my early upgrade but decided it would be better to save my upgrade for a phone I really want.

I think you made a good choice. There is no better phone out right now that has achieved what the D1 has with respect to custom roms and developer support.
Get that thing rooted asap! Try as many roms as you can, my favorite is Chevy's SS roms. But try them out and see what you like.
However, I suspect that once you use the Droid you will realize that you will not want a phone with a locked bootloader (no custom roms). So Motor I hope you are listening to us and don't lock your new super phones.

I'm trying to decide between a D1 and D2. I wouldn't have a problem with a D1 until the Bionic comes out but I hear the D1 can be laggy.
While I don't have experience with the D2, I can say the D1 is outdated but it is still able to compete with the stock (non rooted) phones out today. The D1's major drawback is that it lacks sufficient ram for the time(not sure if the D2 is upgraded with more ram). With that said if you root the D1 and get it properly configured with the correct rom and kernal and some other tweaks, lag is nonexistent. I will say I've played with a stock D1 the other day and that was horrid. Root is a MUST on the D1 now a days. Also, I don't know the status of root and custom roms for the D2, I know it was locked down, not sure if this is still true.
I would not waste an upgrade on any phone out right now, my D1 still rocks! Thanks to Chevy!

I made my choice today. Used my upgrade and went from an Alltel V9M to a Droid X2. I will look at the options when the Bionic is released.
