You'll get varied answers on that. I have used Handcent almost since day one and I got my phone in November of 2010. You just need to remember to turn notifications off on the stock one.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

    I think you meant 2009?

Same here, I've been using Handcent since November 2009 myself.

Handcent was the second application I installed after facebook. Love it for its customization. Definately try it.

Handcent is a great replacement. Would be better if it would do Gtalk.

Handcent has a nicer UI and more functionality than the native application. Plus it is easier to open and get straight to your text messages.

I would also say handcent is great, tho you may find picture messaging to be a pain. I have always had issues sending pic messages, I know its a common issue. I rarely send pic messages, but still go back to stock because you will have a lot less "not sent" notifications.
