Thanks so much for sharing this list, it's fantastic.

Question for you Android gurus - does freezing a file cause it to also be hidden from view in directory listings?

I'd check myself, but, well, my phone's a corpse.

He asked me if I had rooted the phone. I decided to tell the truth, and of course he declined my request for an outright replacement...they decided to send me a free replacement Droid 2 Global

I agree. I had a bad taste in my mouth when I saw it, and kept pressing "Later" on the update; I felt kind of railroaded into it and didn't think to read about freezing it... anyway, moot point, warranty replacement is on the way.

Yes, VZW did mention they're getting a number of brick calls. Motorola releases these updates for them - I can see the logic behind other posters' allegations that this wave of bricked phones only stands to help Motorola's sales and may likely have been an intentional twist in the update. Why modify the bootloader to disallow downgrades? To what purpose?

In other news, I wonder what the developing scene is with the Google purchase of Motorola's handset business.

Speaking of that business move, with Google's purchase of Motorola's handset manufacturing division, Google is running the show. It seems, to me, they now have the say-so to enforce Android security patches to the device firmware level... so, now we have strangely picky bootloaders. Makes sense to me.

    I think you're misunderstanding Motorola.

Try looking at this this way:

You're the hardware manufacturer. You release a smartphone; it has some vulnerabilities. You release patches to fix them, but there is a way for hackers to get the device back to a vulnerable version. What will be your next move?

Right. To remove the possibility of restoring the device to a vulnerable state.

Motorola isn't doing anything malicious there. The DROID2 GLOBAL was marketed as a business phone; on a rooted device they have no way to ensure that your Exchange-related data is secure.

I must say, after all that, I hope that the new phone DOES NOT have 629 on it so I can freeze the update as you guys have all so nicely explained how to do!

This definitely just happened to me too. I tried SPFing back to 3 different versions, all ended up saying successful but still wound up at the bootloader. Eventually called Verizon about it and they are sending me something refurbished. Can someone explain to me just for my own knowledge what we are waiting for to be released to fix this? Thanks for any information.

This update removed the ability to SBF to a previous version of the OS on the phone. So we are waiting for the .629 SBF to be leaked so that we can fix phones like yours.
