No arabic without root?

Hello all,

I am a middle east studies major and I'd like to follow the arabic twitter posts on the revolutions lighting up the region there Problem is, the arabic characters on my phone don't link properly. My research seems to indicate that to fix this problem I'd need to root my phone, is that truly the case?
