No it does not work to the best of my knowledge. You need a computer to do it on the latest and it is called the D3 one-click method.

You could do your research but this is the one I have been using successfully and linked a number of people to: Pete's Motorola Root Tool.

I have been TOLD gingerbreak does work for 2.3.3. I haven't tried it yet however, still kinda nervous to screw up my phone. Very nervous actually. Was told to hook up to pc, enable debugging, and simply run gingerbreak. I am very new to this whole thing. So I am looking for info wherever I can find it.

Well I am not still up on all the version numbers for the d2 but if you are running the latest ota then it does not work. The root tool I linked in my prior post is what you need, or another version of it.

Petes Motorola Root Tool? OTA as in Over The Air, Verizon sent update? Does this method have an option to unroot if necessary? Sorry for all the questions. Like I said earlier, I am very new to this. And I really don't want to mess up my phone because I did something wrong or my lack of knowledge. Do I have to do the backup thing before I root or is that recommend? Thank you in advance. Any knowledge you are willing to share is greatly appreciated. Pm if that is easier.

Don't worry about the questions, I am glad to help and sorry for the confusion with all my terms.

The tool I mentioned is the specific one I used, there are others but that one seems to work the best. And yes over the air update from Verizon. Most backing up you would need to do after rooting and there are several apps which can be used to back up certain things.

I highly recommend checking out the link I am about to post for you. It has tons of info for someone new to rooting. And ask any more questions you have as I am sure there will be plenty

So this tool will work for the Droid2? Does the type of device not matter, just the android version(2.3.3 in this case?) How about the drivers I read about? When I connect my phone to my laptop it recognizes it immediately. That's a driver thing right? You see how uninformed and new I really am. I have also read about people suggesting to put your phone into "charge only mode", prior to rooting. Is that necessary and how do I do it. One last question... for now, everything I read always has a disclaimer about bricking. I understand why its always stated, but is it a common thing? I mean, is this whole thing a 50/50 chance kinda thing? Thanks again for your time and putting up with a newbie.

I dont mind at all and sorry for the long delay, I was driving home from my parents house.
It will work on the d2. In fact it should work on any moto phone running 2.3.3. And yes, if you plug your phone in and its recognized then the drivers are installed.
That's a pretty standard disclaimer. There is always a chance that something can go wrong but an actual true brick is not likely. There is usually a way to recover. Just whenever you are going to install something or mod something, make sure to read up on it and follow any instructions. If you're not sure then ask the questions so you do.
