Help with files

I was wondering how can I get rid of older files that's not in use any longer? I've noticed there is quite a few files left in my phone that I'm no longer using ( most of them are from downloads ) and not sure how to remove them without missing up my phone. Any help would be greatly appriacated thanx

If they are on the sd and you are rooted, there is an app called sd maid. Cleans things up nicely
