There is no risk to rooting, other than voiding the warranty. If you phone has issues later you can use the same app to un-root b4 taking it to verison or in the case of having to have it replaced. Then you would just remove all the root apps and send it off. The only danger is flashing/installing custom roms. You have to be certain to only use roms desighned for the ally.....although I don't think there are any. All you have to do with gingerbreak version 1.2 (I belive the link I used was from 4shared.com) dismount your sd card and run the app. Its really that easy. If you have any other questions p.m. me and I will help if I can. My main phone is a d2g so I only cheack this thread on occasion.

It does not need to be on the root of your sd card. Just install it, if i remember correctly you have to dismount tje sd card then run the app. Its been awhile do i am fuzzy on the steps.

I honestly dont know. I only delved into my wifes old ally when an update caused it to perpetually bootloop. Wound up getting an early upgrade out if it and it is now resting in a drawer some where.

Check out rootzwikki they have an app in the market. Their seems to be some nice roms over there for the ally. Definatly more development than when i was messing with it.

Velocity is about as good a ROM as the Ally can handle. Latest version is 1.2.1, but I think there will be a final update to 1.2.2 soon. Also, go ahead and instal Among Ra's recovery 3.0.6, I think it is. Factory recovery is worthless, and no more support for it anyway. Awesome 1st smartphone, even though atrociously short on memory. The Ally never was one to run with the big dogs, but sure a perfect phone to learn about root and ROM. Don't forget to make a base backup, 'cause starting from FroYo scratch is a PITA, but do-able.
