Yes you can use an app called foxfi to tether your phones signal to the tablet. Its a free app for stock phones.

Foxfi works between TB and Toshiba Thrive on 3.2. The hitch in the giddy-up is the connection must be made with bluetooth. Works, mostly. Fine for occasional browsing but it's a kludge at best.
I use open garden with my galaxy tab 10.1.
Sent from my rooted TBolt
Definitely root your TB and use Barnacle or install a custom ROM such as CyanogenMod 7 that has tethering and hotspot built in for "hacked" (free) access. Bluetooth tethering sucks to say the least, brings me back to the days of dial-up. Good luck!
EDIT: If you are deciding between 3G/4G and WiFi only tablets, go with WiFi, especially when whatever Verizon tab you get will not have unlimited data. And it's cheaper, of course!
not everything reads the adhoc though, like ps3 and kindle fire
True. Android devices won't pick up Ad-Hoc most, if not all the time. But not all the options out there for WiFi tethering use Ad-Hoc. Just try 'em out, not only for that, but for functionality and all that we look for when evaluating apps.
