2.1 App Updates

I thought with the release of 2.1, Apps would automatically update in the background, eliminating the need to search for them in the market?

2.2 has it. I have never seen or heard of 2.1 doing this.

And from what I've seen about 2.2, all it does is give you the option to update all at once, not automatically.
