First of all, you would need a Google Voice account and that is easier said than done to wait for an invite. If you want to speed up the process of getting a Google Voice account, I suggest buying one from ebay. It will save you the hassle of waiting for one. Once you do buy one there, then let me know and we will go on from there.

Wow, I didn't have any idea they were selling Google Voice invites on eBay. Something just doesn't seem right about that.

Not everyone has a smartphone and some confirmation/notification texts (i.e. from banks and such) don't use IM clients to send messages.

I mean to the people that he might be instant messaging to, not everyone has a smartphone and a data plan. Also, I'm talking about services from banks (such as transaction confirmations) where they send you text confirmations. They don't use IM clients to send those confirmations to your phone.
