    email?

I am using the stock gmail app (the one that looks like an envelope) and was wondering two things..1) what is the difference between this one and the other (the one that looks like a mailbox), why would i use one over the other and 2) I will get the @ symbol in my notification bar but when go to my inbox there is no email unless I refresh the inbox..how can I stop the @ symbol from showing up and wait until the envelope pops up in the notificaiton bar that tells me I have a new email?

The mail icon is for people who use an exchange server like a corporate email system.
