I've been on the fence about rooting my phone, and I think I'm ready to do it. But a few questions before I do.
First, after you put the .zip file on your SD card and then apply it where does it go? If it stays on the card how do I put another .zip file on it?
Secondly, as far as making a nandroid backup I can rename them...right? If so are there any do's and don'ts to naming them?
I think with just a few anwsers I'll be ready to take the leap to the darkside.dancedroid TIA
Welcome, and I think you're making a good decision about rooting. If done correctly and loaded up with one of the many awesome ROMs out there I'm sure you won't regret it.
As far as the update.zip file, once you install it in SPRecovery, you can delete it from your SD card. You'll need to remove or rename it before flashing a different ROM or a theme for your current ROM. Some recoveries, like Clockworkmod, allow you to select the zip file from the SD card, even if it isn't named update.zip. Personally, I take the downloaded ROM/Theme file, put it on the SD card (after deleting any update.zip that was there), then rename the new ROM file to update.zip once it's on the SD card. That way you don't have a bunch of update.zip files on your computer, just waiting to cause confusion.
For renaming the backups, you can rename them after they're made, however there are a few do's and don'ts... The Bowers made a handy guide with nandroid error codes with explanations to them that will give you some more info about renaming as well: Nandroid Error Codes

I have a question...if you have frg22d on your phone...droid 1...cant you go into sp recovery...reset the phone to factory settings...get 2.0.1....flash frg01b through sp recovery...then root from there...Quote:

You are talking about the adb commands. That has nothing to do with the link in my signature.
You are basically going back to august 2009 to get to august 2010. Makes 0 sense.
