Motorola Droid 3
Rooted
Eclipse 2.2 [Port]
1. Download Universal Androot from the market.
2. Click on the root button in the app
3. you should now be rooted. In order to overclock you need an app like SetCPU and i recommend installing a different kernel.

OP, I'm not opposed to using tools like EasyRoot. What concerns me is not making folks aware that they should install a recovery process (SPR or ClockWork) that allows you to make a backup which can be restored, should something go wrong.

In order to install a kernel you need another recovery image.
FRG01B may have updated your bootloader so you can't install said image without tricking the phone.

This will trick the phone, root your phone, replace the stock recovery image, and allow you to install a kernel/ROM/theme of your choosing.
If I were you I would do some more reading and get better prepared. In the long run it will reduce your margin for error and make your phone more reliable.

i finally was able to root the phone but i seem to be having a bit of trouble getting a kernal to install i got the app rom manager to get a kernal to install but it dosen't seem to work i am guessing so how do i install it????
I do not use RM but I believe you tap the roms tap, then one of the sections in there gets you to the kernels.
Another option, flash SPR, the alternate recovery, download the kernel, rename to update.zip, and use SPR to install.
