Noob looking for rooting help
What up? I just got a moto droid yesterday (FGR01B) running android version 2.2. All the threads I've read tell you how to root your 2.1 moto droid and I'm afraid to try and follow those instructions and end up bricking it or something since I'm running a 2.2.
Idk anything [yet] about hacking droids but I have had alot of expirience hacking the SonyPSP so I'm definitely capable. I'm just having some problems getting started here.
So how do I root a 2.2 moto Droid? And out of curiousity, what's the difference between Android 2.2 and the Froyo 2.2?

is your droid the official 2.2.

Yeah. Not rooted or anything. It says Android version 2.2. I haven't done anything to this phone yet.

Thats interesting. For tight now the only way to rrot is use rsdlite to flash 2.1 sprecovery 81 and then apply a rom.

PC747 is correct.
Look in the hacking section here for a good sticky thread on what rooting is all about.
Review the various roms offered in that section.
Bascially you'd follow something like the 1st or 3rd link in my signature, then replace your OS with a rooted Rom. Some come with themes and other stuff preinstalled, or enhancements (tweaks) to the OS that can extend the battery like pinging for wifi less frequently when it is on.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

So the roms are basically operating systems or firmware for your droid? What are a few of the most popular or highest rated roms?

Bugless Beast, Cyanogen, and Lithium Mod are the most popular. IMO

Yes, the rom is a snapshot or image that is applied to the phone, replacing the current one. It also might be a subset of that as well. You can flash an entire rom, or just a theme that replacing select graphics, or just replace the kernel to get one you can overclock. Read through the "what is root" thread in the hacking section. It's all in there.
If there are 10 roms out there and you ask which ones are best you will get 10 different answers
I think more important than which is best is the fact that you'd be hard pressed to see posts like "this one stinks, run away from it!"
The community has some real talented folks out there that dedicate some serious hours for the rest of us.
Browse through the forum and you will see the Rom section. Most have sticky threads announcing their latest work and you can see screenshots and instructions for most of them right in the first post. Read the specs, get familar with what each does, then try a couple. If one doesn't like your phone or you don't like it then just switch to another. Once you've got the process down pat you can swap roms in 5-10 minutes.
