How to root? (newbie)

Hi
I hope in in the right spot.
I was looking at tht themes and I saw the black glass 2.2 and I loved it and want it but It say I need to root my phone. Can I get a step by step on how to do this and then how to add the black glass theme. Also what other benifits would I get in rooting?

Stock 2.1 to 2.2 Froyo Step By Step installation

this will get you to 2.2 and then you can use rom manager to install the theme. any more questions just ask

after rooting you can overclock your droid which will give you a performance boost and you have alot of options for themes and roms
