Roms and Kernels?

Okay...
My Droid is now rooted with the stock Verizon 2.1 ROM.
Used SP Recovery and Root instructions from YouTube training by MotoDroidLife....very simple.

Now I have a few questions.

My WiFi Tether app faults with "No Netfilters".
I was told to install one of AdamZ's kernels?

Big Newbie questions....
What is a Kernel and how does it fit in with a ROM?

and jees...
Who's Rom should I load? (Due to how many there are, I bet this is a debatable question)

Can I overclock without a new ROM?

1. Unsure, Ive never had a problem with the wifi tether.
2. Kernel dev depends on the rom, som roms only work on certain kernels. Kernels mainly control the cpu speed (overclocking), but some newer ROMS need certain kernels for 360 rotation, and apps2SD
3. Try them all! Just remember to do a full nandroid backup, and you can switch back and forth. I use Bugless Beast, and UD New Era. Ive heard Jrummy's ROM is god too, but I havent tried it yet.

You don't need a new ROM to overclock and wifi tether, you just need a custom kernel that allows you to. P3 LV kernels work very well and will run cool. P3Droid Kernels You should probably start with 800mhz and see if that is fast enough for you. Most phones will run stable and cool at that speed, but if you want to go faster you can try one of the other ones. If you are using sprecovery you just remane the file to update.zip like you did when you rooted, boot into recovery and install it. All you need then is set cpu from the market to set your speeds and an app to tether (barnacle from the market works well).

I got my tether app form here:

But I did notice these are for for root users of Rom 2.0. So I will probably have to uninstall this apk.
