I'd really like to do this but I can't even get Android Phone to come up. The drivers refuse to be updated.

im trying to use the SDK application installer from the first post, and i get an error message:

"Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/re...repository.xml, reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP in the settings."

**early edit** i believe i figured this part out. for some reason i kept going to settings in chrome... durrr***

though i have my path set correctly, i can access 'adb shell' ($) but if i try to mount i get an error "

any ideas? do i need the application installed? - i dont believe im rooted atm. i was but after system updates i doubt that persists?

The motorola PC drivers page referenced above does not _seem_ to have the driver for my Droid X (MB810)

Both PCDriver1 & PCDriver2 appear to be for models beginning with a W.

Help???

I have the SDK working, ddms works.

I type:
adb shell

and get a "$" prompt.

I type:
su

and get "su: permission denied"

Didn't realize I had to root the phone first.

I am so new to this that I squeak. I have seen many other so called tutorials on ADB but this is the first one that explains a bit of what is going on.

What is mounting and remounting. I do not understand what is being done. Can someone enlighten me?

Great write up. Now to remove a few pre-installed apps

Removing pre-installed apps worked great. Only made one mistake and removed the voicedialer.apk by mistake. I'm still able to do a voice dialer through the speaker on the phone search. Are there other functions for the VoiceDialer.apk that is going to hinder me if I do not have it on there?

What does ADB and APKS stand for? Meaning?

What does following these instructions allow you to do with your phone. I don't know anything about this stuff and just need someone to show me where I can go to learn or who I get in touch with to help. Your tutorial is very detailed and I know took a LOT of time...... It is much appreciated. But to do this to my phone and the ask, " wonder what I just did "....... ya know what I mean? Could you help? thanks.
