questions about removing Verizon/Pre-installed apps

I tried typing a search...but there are no topics that I could find re: these particular questions.

OK...so I know how to do it. Just not sure I understand all the ramifications.

I want to remove Corp Cal, Corp email, email, amazon MP3, and possibly visual voicemail.

Once I do this...What are my potential issues moving forward? Will this prevent me from updating to a ROM in the future?

Does removing these increase my memory? or just get the icons out of the way and out of the app drawer?

well im using the sholes now droidmod ROM and i know that they have the option to remove all these when installing the rom, and i havn't had any issues after removing corp cal, amazon, or visual voicemail, while briefly checking out other ROMS just for fun.. as far as increasing memory, im not sure so hopefully some one can chime in and help you further..

so for me no issues removing them, no icons in app drawer, and im not sure on the effect of the phones memory..

I'm removed several of the 'stock' apps while flashing ROMs and I have had zero issues. No problems switching ROMs either.

OK...I am not totally sure how I should proceed?...I have seen two sets of commands Move (mv) and Remove (rm)

To start I type:
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
cd /system/app

this is where I am unsure....

If I type: "mv Email.apk Email.bak" that does not pull it but rename and make it unavailable.

If I type: "rm Email.apk" that actually pulls the app from the phone.

Is this correct?

Also...If I uninstall something other than VVM which can be downloaded from the market. How do I put it back if I need it later?

I believe so. Here is what I used to remove the faulty Launcher2.apk...

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
cd /system/app
rm Launcher2.apk
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
sync
reboot

Just replace the bolded part with the app you want to remove, capitalization counts. If I am wrong, someone more experienced than me will come along shortly to set us all straight. :D

a much easier way to go about this is to use xeudoxus's xUltimate program...

when you update a rom you may have to remove the apk's again. i renamed car home to .bak, because i hated it and found it useless. when i updated from BB7.4 to BB7.5 i had to do it all over. when i installed AdamZ Smoked Glass rom v4.5 i also had to do it once again. i also renamed email, and coprcal since i don't use them either.

i have never seen any bad side affects from doing this. i see no issue with removing stock apps that you don't like or use.

a much easier way would also be to use "root explorer" from the market. go into system/apps and then either rename the app to a .bak to hide it, or delete it if you want to permanently remove it.

i did this to launcher2, email, car home, and the corporate calender. i renamed them all to a .bak, just in case i ever decided i wanted to use them again.

I downloaded the Root Explorer to my Droid X since it had great reviews and you also recommended it. :)

I went into the path/ directory of "system/ app" and see many of the pre-installed applications there. When I select one, my phone does not give me an option to delete. Instead, I get "Package Installer. This is a package installer. What action would you like to perform? Install, View, or Cancel". Those are my only options. :icon_eek:

How do I actually delete one of these applications?

I seem to be missing something obvious.

Hmmmm, I think I figured it out.

If you press down on the item you wish to remove and hold it there for a few seconds, it brings up another menu which gives the option to delete.

Well then, please disregard the previous then.

For those who wish to delete or rename those pre-installed apps, that's what you do - download Root Explorer, follow the path of "system/ app" and hold down the item you wish to change or delete. Not sure if the pre-installed apps are affiliated with any other applications or items in there, but if I have any further trouble I'll repost here.
