rooting a a droid incredible for use as a wifi only no service toy

Hi guys
i hope some of you more experienced guys can help. i have an htc droid incredible 1 that is left lying around as i upgraded to a 2, i would like to root it , maybe put cyanogen mod on it and mess around with it and use it for wifi only to test roms and play games on. i wish someone would make a droid based toy like the ipod touch but i thought i could do this myself ???? thoughts? also what about taking an ebay droid with a bad esn and rooting it to use as a gaming toy or wifi only device ???

What version of Android is the Inc running?

its runnning 2.3 when last used.

You could always root it and then put it in airplane mode. Leave it in airplane mode all the time with only WiFi turned on. It does work, I'm doing it right now. You will probably get great battery life as well. Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback. ive dont that when i used the phone but not tried anything with it since i got my new phone. any thoughts on used phones from ebay without service to use as a gaming / test platform ? am i in the right part of the forum for these questions ?

Hey i found this advice on the web

"You can bypass the Verizon activation screen by tapping the four corners of the screen in a clockwise order starting from the top left.

just do a factory reset on your phone through the Settings menu and all of your data will be removed from the phone (the stuff on the SD card will stay intact, though). Then bypass the activation screen and she can go into the settings menu to put in your own GMail account credentials.

even if its deactivated you can still use wifi connection to use apps and access the market.

if you want to retain the apps though on your phone for her to use with out haveing to redownload them, look for apps2sd. It will put your apps on your sd card and then you can install them once you are back in business after the reset. "

sounds like it should work ?? now i just wonder about a rooted used phone off ebay that could have a bad esn?? they are super cheap.

any thoughts ?

I bought 3 D1s last December and for xmas gave them to my 7 to 9 year olds for them to use as mp3/game devices like an iPod. I set them up in airplane mode and put a wifi widget on the home screen so the kids can turn on wifi when they want to down games, check emails/Facebook, etc. It works great for them and my 15 year old has taken one and has rooted it and uses it to test stuff...
