One last question. Does this root the phone? what is the fifference between "root" and this 0.99 thing? Noob, sorry. Been flashing on the window side for years, loved it.

1. No won't lose your apps. Steps 43-49 ensure that you will have your apps and other personal data like txt message conversations.
2. This thread should answer your question.

Step 2-8 will 'root' the phone.
The droid has a stock recovery image that needs to be replaced with the custom recovery image ("0.99 thing") that provides for the flashing of the custom ROM. It replaces what you see in steps 5,6,7 with what you will see in steps 29,30.

This is the most helpful post I've seen yet! I am already using the Sholes ROM, but it took me forever to figure out how to make everything work. I really like how you explain what is happening when you type all of the gibberish into the Terminal Emulator. That really helps me understand what I'm doing instead of just blindly following instructions. I installed the ROM over another version of 2.0.1 and have not been able to get wifi tethering to work and it seems really slow and choppy, so I will use this method to install it over the verginoem and see if that helps. I also see that they are expecting to have an update very soon that will fix the brightness issue, so I'll stop at step 49 until the next version is released.
Thanks for the write up! I followed it and it worked out beautifully.
One thing though...and no one seems to have a problem with it so far...
Sometime before step 10, or before it is used in step 15, could you tell the end user to extract flash_image.zip? As of today, the link posted before step 1 points to flash_image.zip and not flash_image. A "n00b" might get lost here. Am I getting too picky here?
Other than that, Great Work!! Thanks for giving back to the community!
What if the nandroid recovery comes up and not the /!\ ??
i dont need to press vol up and camera
Great DIY. Best I've seen. Anyway when I went through the checklist for the rom, I had both the 2.1 and the 2.0.1 launchers checkmarked. So I'm on the rom but have the 2.0.1 launcher but with 5 screen. How can I get the 2.1 launcher with the nice cube?
@barcodelinux - You're welcome! No, you're NOT too picky. (Fixed - See step 10.) And thank you for the help!
@ska8r411 - You will only see the /!\ the first time you boot into recovery in step 5. After you have flashed the custom recovery image in steps 10-23 , you will no longer see the /!\ when booting into recovery.
@bernal125 - I would boot into recovery and do steps 37-58 again but this time at step 55 be sure to uncheck the 2.0.1 launcher while leaving the 2.1 launcher checked. That should do it.

When I do step 21 "Type 'mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.old'. This should prevent the custom recovery from being over-written on reboot." I get "failed on '/system/recovery-from-boot.p' -No such file or directory"
How do I 'unroot' my phone? I have rooted 2.01.
