Can't create Nandroid backup

Hey all, I'm running stock 2.2.2 on a Droid 1 with build number FRG83G. I've successfully rooted it the other day but looking through all of the tutorials for creating a Nandroid backup, everybody says you need "Droid root helper" which I cannot find in the Marketplace.

I ran a few custom roms last summer but was content with stock after that up until now. Are there updated tutorials or am I just missing something too simple?

PS, my end goal is to install new roms, and I'm trying to bridge the gap between rooted and there.

How did you root? Do you have a custom recovery installed?

You don't need root helper. That's trying to get you to buy something.

You do need a custom recovery though.

You can flash with ROM Mangler or sbf one on.

There are tutorials for that. Easiest thing to do is flash with ROM Mangler and then apply the update.zip in link one in my signature, to remove FRS. Then you will have no issues rebooting into recovery.

That is the easiest and best way IMO.

Not familiar with that process. You need a custom recovery to make a backup. Since you say you have root access, go to the market and get Rom Manager. Its free. Launch the app and look for the ClockworkMod option. Select that and let it run. After your phone boots back up, turn it off, then hold the power + X buttons until you see ClockworkMod's recovery. Then use the volume rocker to change the options and the camera button to select. You can make a backup in rom manager, but I wouldnt. Making backups in recovery is more reliable.

Gosh, I can't believe I looked over the giant "Boot into Recovery" button on Rom Manager. I'm flashing to a new Rom now, thanks a lot to both of you for the advice!

Alright, having a slight issue. I got into recovery mode and chose install from SD card, I selected the rom I downloaded the other day and it looked like it installed fine. After I rebooted, it got stuck in a boot loop (the red eye and the word "droid"). I rebooted and recovered to where I was at but is there another step I'm missing?

Did you wipe before installing the rom? That can cause bootloops. I wipe everything and dont have problems.

i did the rom manager clockwork recovery and it doesnt give me an option for backup in recovery for some reason what am i doing wrong?
